Vocabulary Verbs

Something I find interesting: English verbs that take specific objects.

Verbs such as “eat” use types of objects, such as “edible things/foodstuffs”. But I’m talking about verbs that traditionally use only one or two different objects, even though other objects would make sense logically. Some example verbs that I can think of, and their ‘default’ objects:

  • contemplate – the meaning of life, suicide
  • transact – business
  • tender – a resignation
  • render – fat, graphics, something obsolete

Does anyone have any other examples?

  1. Oh, I have some!

    Fiddle – (with) a dial.
    Deposit – sperm.

I was going to say “fuck,” but people fuck all kinds of shit.

    Is this a family-friendly blog?
